How FFL Transfers Work in South Carolina
How FFL Transfers Work in South Carolina: A Simple Guide for Bluffton Gun Buyers
Buying a firearm online is easier than it has ever been, but you cannot just have it shipped to your front door. Federal law requires every firearm shipped across state lines to go through a Federal Firearms Licensee, or FFL, in the buyer's home state. That is where we come in.
Plantation Iron handles FFL transfers for buyers throughout Bluffton and the Lowcountry. Here is exactly how the process works, so there are no surprises when your firearm arrives.
What Is an FFL Transfer?
When you buy a firearm from an online retailer, an out-of-state seller, or an auction site, the seller ships it to a licensed dealer near you, not to your home. The dealer receives the firearm, logs it, runs your background check, and completes the legal paperwork before handing it over. That whole handoff is the FFL transfer.
It exists for one reason. Federal law requires that interstate firearm transfers run through a licensed dealer so the buyer's background check happens in their own state.
The Process, Step by Step
- Buy your firearm. Purchase from any online retailer, auction site, or out-of-state seller.
- Send them our FFL information. During checkout, most retailers ask you to select or provide a receiving dealer. Contact us at (843) 757-6900 and we will get our license information to your seller directly. Most sellers require the FFL copy to come from us, not from you.
- We receive and log your firearm. When it arrives, we check it in and log it into our records as federal law requires. We will contact you when it is ready. Please wait for our call rather than showing up with just a delivery notification, since carrier tracking can show delivered before we have processed it into our system.
- Come in and complete ATF Form 4473. This is the standard federal transfer form every buyer completes. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID that shows your current address.
- Background check. In South Carolina, handgun checks are processed through SLED, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, and long gun checks go directly through the FBI's NICS system. Most checks come back in minutes. If you hold a valid South Carolina Concealed Weapons Permit, it serves as an alternative to the background check. Bring it with you and the process moves even faster.
- Take your firearm home. South Carolina has no state waiting period. Once your check comes back approved, the transfer is complete and the firearm is yours.
What to Bring
- Valid government-issued photo ID with your current address
- Your SC Concealed Weapons Permit, if you have one
- Your order confirmation or seller info, in case anything needs matching up
Common Questions
What if my background check comes back Delayed?
A delay is not a denial. It means the FBI needs more time. Under federal rules, if no final answer comes back after three business days, the transfer may legally proceed at the dealer's discretion. We will keep you posted either way.
Does an FFL transfer register my gun?
No. Transferring is not registering. There is no general federal firearm registry, and South Carolina does not require registration of standard firearms. The 4473 stays in our records as federal law requires. It does not go into a government database of gun owners.
Can I ship a gun I am selling to an out-of-state buyer?
Yes, but it has to go to an FFL in the buyer's state, never directly to the buyer. We can help with outbound transfers too. Give us a call.
Do private sales between South Carolina residents need an FFL?
In-state private sales between South Carolina residents do not require a dealer under state law, but it remains illegal to transfer a firearm to anyone prohibited from owning one. When in doubt, especially if you do not know the buyer, running it through a dealer protects both parties.
